Territorial Context

Portuguese cobblestone pavement originated in Lisbon, where raw material was abundant, and quickly spread throughout the country with remarkable works from north to south and across the islands. It gained international recognition, especially in Portuguese-speaking countries, being highly appreciated and valued abroad. However, in Portugal, the traditional know-how is at risk due to a lack of renewal in the professional workforce.

Master cobblestone pavers have been invited to work abroad, where they often remain, given the higher recognition and remuneration. Even so, Lisbon continues to serve as a historical and artistic reference for this art, standing out for its tradition, as well as the quantity and quality of its examples.
