Portuguese cobblestone pavement is one of the most iconic elements of national identity and culture, admired for its beauty and uniqueness. However, the art faces challenges that threaten its continuity. The preservation of such an important heritage requires the recognition and appreciation of master pavers, true guardians of this craft.
After three years of work, the Portuguese Pavement Association gathered the support of over 50 pavers from across the country, the collaboration of eight municipalities—Braga, Estremoz, Faro, Funchal, Lisbon, Ponta Delgada, Porto de Mós, and Setúbal—and the backing of more than twenty institutions connected to culture, Academia, training, professional organisations, and workers’ confederations. This mobilisation demonstrates the national significance of Portuguese pavement and the need for its recognition.
Beyond its cultural value, Portuguese cobblestone pavement constitutes a strategic asset for Portugal, contributing to urban enhancement, tourism, and the projection of Portuguese culture on the global stage. Its presence in various countries historically linked to Portugal further reinforces its role as a vehicle for cultural affirmation.
In 2021, the Portuguese Pavement Association succeeded in having the “Art and Craftsmanship of Portuguese Cobblestone Pavement” inscribed on the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Now, with this UNESCO nomination, the aim is to extend this recognition and affirmation.
With this UNESCO nomination of the “Art and Craftsmanship of Portuguese Cobblestone Pavement,” the aim is to ensure that Portuguese pavement continues to be a living symbol of national culture, respected and supported, and that master pavers receive the recognition they deserve.
